Day 4

Opening Prayer from Psalm 119:33-37

Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep thtem to the end.  Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.  Driect me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.  Turn my heart tward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.  Turn my eyes away from worthless things; renew my life according to your word.

Song:  Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

written & composed by  Helen H. Lemmel

Refrain:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
.
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There's a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!

Refrain

Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conquerors we are!

Refrain

His Word shall not fail you, He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

Refrain

Psalm 121 (NIV)

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
    where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Interact with the LORD and His Word:

Praise you, O LORD, my maker and my redeemer.  You know what troubles me today and that you alone are my help and my salvation.  Turn my eyes away from the path that I fear slipping on to you who is able to watch over and protect me.  As your Word says, your right arm is not to short to save.   Amen.

Main Bible Text: Isaiah 30 & 40

(Read slowly from your own copy of the Word, intent not on how much you read but on hearing what the LORD wants to say to you through His Word.  If you find that your mind is wandering, just reread the same section again and again until your mind is truly contemplating the truth of God's Word.  When the LORD opens your eyes to some truth, write it down--perhaps even on a notecard that you can meditate on throughout the day.  If you don't understand some part of the passage, ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding.  BibleGateway is also a great resource.  Look under "STUDY THIS" and then "COMMENTARIES.")

Concluding Prayer time

Spend time in prayer.

  • Confess sin & if none comes to mind ask the LORD to call to mind any sin that you need to deal with.

  • Thanksgiving:  Thank the LORD for His blessings in your life, for His Word & His salvation.

  • Petition:  Recognize who He is and His power to handle the things that concern you today.  Then tell the LORD what is on your heart.  If you're troubled about something, tell Him and then ask for His help.  Pray for the needs that you're aware of, whatever they might be.

  • Conclude with a recognition that your desire is for His will to be done in all of your requests--"In Jesus' name.  Amen.
