Emotion Code and Body Code: Can Trapped Emotions Really Make You Sick?

Everyone is talking about trauma these days. We hear about emotional wounds, unresolved grief, and the ways our experiences affect our health. And rightly so. Scripture itself acknowledges the intimate connection between our emotional and physical lives. This subject is personal to me as well, as the victim of childhood abuse, as well as an adult traumatic event. I know first-hand the far-reaching impact of trauma.
Into this conversation has stepped a popular system created by Dr. Bradley Nelson called The Emotion Code, later followed by The Body Code, The Belief Code, and The Heart Code. These practices have gained a large following, including among Christians, because they offer a compelling explanation for suffering: negative emotions supposedly become trapped in the body as energetic residue, where they interfere with the body’s energy systems and contribute to disease.
The proposed solution is equally intriguing. Through muscle testing, a practitioner identifies the trapped emotion and then releases it by passing a magnet over the governing meridian while holding an intention in the mind.
For many people, these ideas seem hopeful—even freeing. After all, who wouldn’t want healing from emotional pain and illness?
But Christians should ask some important questions.
1st, does Nelson’s understanding of emotions and how to deal with them agree with Scripture?
2nd, does Nelson’s methodology hold up to scientific scrutiny?
3rd, is there spiritual danger in surrendering the healing of a broken heart to an energy-based practice?
(I will cover the 2nd and 3rd questions in subsequent posts in this series.)
What Does the Bible Say About Emotions?
Scripture clearly teaches that emotions are real and that emotional suffering can affect the body. Solomon wrote:
“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”—Proverbs 14:30 (NIV)
“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”—Proverbs 17:22 (ESV)
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” —Proverbs 4:23 (ESV)
Yes, the heart is critical to health! The Bible recognizes that grief, fear, anxiety, bitterness, and joy affect us deeply. But nowhere does Scripture describe emotions as energetic substances that become trapped in organs or tissues.
Instead, emotions are portrayed as thoughts of the heart--spirit and soul—not as frequencies or invisible energies requiring energetic manipulation.
God’s Remedies Are Relational and Spiritual, Not Energetic
When God’s people struggle with emotional pain, Scripture consistently points them toward relational and spiritual responses that center on God as the gentle healer of hearts. In Psalm 147:3 it says, “He (God) heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
I love the picture this verse paints because wound care is not magical. It’s a process.
As someone who has experienced trauma and the profound depression and illness that flowed out of those traumas, I understand the temptation to long for a quick fix. Who wouldn't want a magnet or some other technique to instantly remove years of pain? But God paints a different picture. One that doesn’t create bondage to fear of your emotions and to a treatment for the rest of your life.
He describes Himself as One who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Think for a moment about how physical wounds are treated. A wound must first be cleansed. Dirt and debris must be removed. If infection is present, it must be addressed. Medicine or salve may be applied. The wound is then bandaged and protected, and over time, with repeated care, healing gradually occurs.
No wonder God describes the healing for emotional wounds with the illustration of wound care!
There may be unforgiveness lodged deep in the wound.
· “bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” --Colossians 3:13 (NKJV)
There may be the infection of bitterness that needs attention.
· “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”—Ephesians 4:31–32 (ESV)
There may be anxieties that need to be continually brought before the Lord.
· “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV)
There may be sins that need confession and the heavy burden of guilt lifted.
· “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”—1 John 1:9 (ESV)
There may be lies that need to be replaced with truth.
· “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”—Romans 12:2 (ESV)
And throughout the process, there is the comfort and care of our Great Physician, who does not merely remove symptoms but faithfully ministers to the whole person.
None of this is to suggest that Christians should walk this path alone. I personally needed the wise guidance of godly counselors to help me sort through and put back together the jumbled pieces of my broken heart. It wasn’t easy, and it did take time, but oh, how good is the gentle Shepherd of our hearts! God often works through pastors, mature believers, counselors, physicians, and loving friends as instruments of His grace. Most importantly, His Word is the healing balm and cannot be neglected if one desires true and lasting healing.
The biblical picture of healing is not one of discovering hidden emotional energies and releasing them through physical manipulation. Rather, it is a relational and spiritual process mapped out in the Word of God and implemented by the loving Father as we look to Him to do what we cannot do ourselves—heal our hearts.
And this brings us to another important question.
Do the scientific claims behind Emotion Code and Body Code support what Bradley Nelson teaches?
If emotions are truly energetic residues that become trapped in the body, we should expect there to be evidence that these energies exist and that the methods used to identify and release them actually work.
In the next article, we'll take a careful look at the scientific claims behind Emotion Code and Body Code, including muscle testing, meridians, and the study offered by Discover Healing itself.
