Why Christians must discern the true power behind “energy healing.”

The Growing Appeal of “Energy”
Energy medicine is quickly gaining ground, especially among those weary of conventional medicine. Its appeal lies in its promise of balance, healing, and wholeness through this nebulous “energy” that supposedly surrounds us. But few realize that beneath its gentle-sounding language lies a deeply spiritual framework—one not rooted in biblical truth but in ancient religious traditions.
Outside the church, energy medicine is openly spiritual. Practitioners freely reference Chi from Taoism, Prana and Chakras from Hinduism, and auras or energy bodies from New Age beliefs. Within Christian circles, however, the same concepts are often “sanitized” with scientific-sounding terms like “biofields,” “vibrations,” frequencies, and “energetic balance.” But a new vocabulary doesn’t change an old foundation.
What Energy Medicine Claims
Energy medicine teaches that invisible forces flow through and around the body. When this “energy” becomes blocked—through stress, trauma, parasites, toxins, negative thoughts, or, you name it!—disease results. The goal sounds innocuous and beautiful—to restore “balance.” Who doesn’t want to be in balance after all? Practices may include muscle testing, reiki, acupuncture, emotional release therapy, homeopathy, herbs, essential oils, crystals, or frequency devices—all meant to “remove energetic blocks.”
While this may sound harmless, or even scientific, the truth is that these practices are built on a belief in spiritual energy that has no grounding in Scripture. In fact, its very vocabulary originates in worldviews that deny the authority and power of the one true God.
Spiritual Power by Another Name
Even prominent leaders in the energy medicine movement admit that these energies are not measurable and likely “a bridge into the world of spirit.” (1) That statement alone should give believers pause.
Scripture gives us the true meaning of energy. The Greek word enérgeia, used by the apostle Paul, literally means power in action—but it NEVER refers to human vitality or natural forces. It ALWAYS describes spiritual power at work—either the power of God or the counterfeit power of Satan.
“For it is God who works (energeó) in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” — Philippians 2:13
When the Bible speaks of energy, it speaks of the supernatural—not the physical. God’s energy works righteousness in His people, empowering them to do His work. But Scripture also warns that Satan’s energy works deception in those who reject the truth.
Satan’s Counterfeit “Healing”
In 2 Thessalonians 2:9–10, Paul writes that the coming of the lawless one “will be in accordance with how Satan works (enérgeia)—he will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie.” In light of this prophetic warning of the last days in 2 Thessalonians 2, is it mere coincidence that energy medicine has arisen and flourished? I think not.
Satan cannot bring true healing, but he can counterfeit it. Demonic oppression can mimic illness—and relief from that torment can feel like a miracle. When this happens under the guise of energy medicine, it deceives people into trusting the counterfeit instead of the Creator.
The Test of Truth
God allows deception in the last days to reveal the hearts of men—to see who loves the truth and who will believe the lie (2 Thess. 2:11–12). The rise of energy medicine may well be one of these deceptions, luring many who seek healing but not the Healer.
The truth is this: energy is not a neutral force. It is either God’s power at work for good or Satan’s power at work for deception. The Bible calls Satan “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2)—and energy medicine’s belief in a mysterious force that surrounds and flows through all things echoes that description too closely to ignore.
Real Healing Comes from God
True healing—body, soul, and spirit—comes not through energy fields or frequencies, but through reconciliation with God. “A heart at peace gives life to the body” (Prov. 14:30). When we walk in truth and peace with Him, His Spirit truly energizes us from within—with the kind of life the enemy can only imitate.
Reflection:
Energy medicine may look like light, but its source determines its nature. Will you seek the true Light who gives life—or the counterfeit that only deceives?
